Store-operated calcium entry: Pivotal roles in renal physiology and pathophysiology

Sarika Chaudhari et al.

Summary: Research has shown the significant role of store-operated calcium channels (SOCC) in the kidney, regulating the function of various cells through Ca2+ signaling and impacting renal function. SOCC is activated by depletion of Ca2+ stores, playing a crucial role in blood pressure regulation, fluid balance, electrolyte balance and other functions in the kidney.

Urinary- and Plasma-Derived Exosomes Reveal a Distinct MicroRNA Signature Associated With Albuminuria in Hypertension

Javier Perez-Hernandez et al.

Summary: This study identified a signature of dysregulated circulating miRNAs associated with albuminuria in hypertension. In particular, miR-26a in exosomes seemed to play a key role in the regulation of TGF-beta, a relevant effector in kidney damage.

piRNAs as Modulators of Disease Pathogenesis

Kayla J. Rayford et al.

Summary: Advancements in understanding disease pathogenesis correlate with modifications in gene expression across different tissues and organ systems. Small non-coding RNAs, such as PIWI-interacting RNAs (piRNAs), play crucial roles in gene expression regulation and have emerged as important players in various diseases. Research on piRNAs continues to unravel their diverse roles in cellular processes and pathology development.

TGF-Beta as a Master Regulator of Diabetic Nephropathy

Li Wang et al.

Summary: This review discusses the diverse roles and signaling mechanisms of TGF-beta in diabetic nephropathy, focusing on latent versus active TGF-beta 1, TGF-beta receptors, and downstream Smad signaling molecules. The regulatory mechanisms of TGF-beta/Smad signaling in the development of DN, including Smad-dependent non-coding RNAs, are also dissected. Finally, potential therapeutic strategies for DN targeting TGF-beta signaling with various approaches are discussed.

Non-Coding RNAs in Kidney Diseases: The Long and Short of Them

Juan Antonio Moreno et al.

Summary: Recent genomic research has uncovered a previously underestimated level of transcription within the genome, particularly involving long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) and their role in gene regulation. Understanding the intricate crosstalk between lncRNAs, microRNAs (miRNAs), and messenger RNAs (mRNAs) presents a significant challenge in modern molecular biology. Additionally, lncRNAs are emerging as potential prognostic biomarkers for both acute and chronic kidney diseases, with therapeutic opportunities being explored through targeting lncRNAs with antisense oligonucleotides.

Podocyte Glucocorticoid Receptors Are Essential for Glomerular Endothelial Cell Homeostasis in Diabetes Mellitus

Swayam Prakash Srivastava et al.

Summary: The study found that the loss of glucocorticoid receptor in podocytes leads to upregulation of the Wnt signaling pathway and disruption in fatty acid metabolism, resulting in the development of diabetic nephropathy. The crosstalk between podocytes and endothelial cells is crucial for maintaining glomerular homeostasis, and its disruption may contribute to diabetic nephropathy.

Pdcd10-Stk24/25 complex controls kidney water reabsorption by regulating Aqp2 membrane targeting

Rui Wang et al.

Summary: The PDCD10-STK-ERM signaling pathway was identified as a potentially novel pathway for water balance control in the kidneys, by regulating vesicle trafficking and protein abundance of AQP2. Deficiency of Pdcd10 or Stk24/25 in mice led to decreased levels of Aqp2 protein in tubular epithelial cells, associated with impaired intracellular vesicle trafficking and increased expression of certain proteins. Treatment with Erlotinib normalized the expression level and membrane abundance of Aqp2 protein, partially rescuing the water reabsorption defect.
