Genome-wide association analysis of bean fly resistance and agro-morphological traits in common bean

Wilson Nkhata et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the population structure of a diverse panel of common bean genotypes and deduce associations between bean fly resistance and agronomic traits based on single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers. Through phenotyping and genotyping, significant variations were found in disease severity, mortality rate, pupa count, and other agronomic traits among the genotypes. The genotypes were categorized into Andean and Mesoamerican gene pools, and 83 significant markers were identified for marker-assisted selection in breeding programs.

Advances and trends on the utilization of multi-parent advanced generation intercross (MAGIC) for crop improvement

Kajal Samantara et al.

Summary: Introduction of modern tools and techniques in crop breeding and genetics is essential to meet the increasing demand for food and adapt to extreme environmental changes. Multi-parent advanced generation intercross (MAGIC) populations offer advantages such as wider allelic variation and high resolution mapping of complex traits, and have been successfully applied in various crop species. Utilization of DNA sequencing technology has enabled the accumulation of large amounts of sequence data, but remains a common bottleneck in breeding and genetics, especially for complex genomes of multi-parent populations.
