Circulating angiopoietin-2 and angiogenic microRNAs associate with cerebral small vessel disease and cognitive decline in older patients reaching end-stage renal disease

Roel Bijkerk et al.

Summary: This study focused on the association between levels of angiopoietin and cognitive impairment in ESRD patients, revealing an unfavorable angiogenic profile in these patients and identifying certain miRNAs associated with different cognitive domains. These novel angiogenic markers may help to identify cognitive decline in older ESRD patients.

Estradiol-driven metabolism in transwomen associates with reduced circulating extracellular vesicle microRNA-224/452

Barend W. Florijn et al.

Summary: This study assessed the impact of estradiol-driven miRs on metabolism in transwomen, finding that silencing of miR-224 and miR-452 increased lipogenesis in mice and cultured adipocytes while decreasing glucose uptake and mitochondrial respiration. Differentially expressed genes in white and brown adipose tissue were associated with lipid metabolism and mitochondrial function, providing a potential mechanistic understanding of the metabolic effects following gender-affirming estradiol therapy.

Summary: The study found that treatment with miR-221 mimic reduced cerebral infarction volume and improved behavioral deficits in mice with cerebral ischemia. Additionally, miR-221 treatment significantly decreased the expression of proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines, and inhibited macrophage infiltration and microglial activation.
