Trefoil Factor Family (TFF) Peptides and their Different Roles in the Mucosal Innate Immune Defense and More: An Update

Werner Hoffmann

Summary: Mucous epithelia are protected by complex mucus barrier layers, with Trefoil factor family peptides playing a key role in innate immune defense. TFF1 and TFF2 are mainly expressed in the gastric mucosa, while TFF3 is secreted widely from various mucous epithelia. Systematic analyses of the molecular forms of TFFs have revealed diverse functions, including lectin activities and interactions with proteins involved in mucosal innate immunity.

Trefoil Factor Family (TFF) Peptides and Their Links to Inflammation: A Re-evaluation and New Medical Perspectives

Werner Hoffmann

Summary: Trefoil factor family peptides (TFF1, TFF2, TFF3) and mucins are typical exocrine products of mucous epithelia with various physiological functions. TFF peptides, especially TFF2 secreted by myeloid cells and lymphocytes, play important roles in modulating inflammatory processes. These peptides have different lectin activities and may have potential implications in glycoimmunology research.

Characterization of Extracellular Vesicle Cargo in Sjogren's Syndrome through a SWATH-MS Proteomics Approach

Francesco Finamore et al.

Summary: In this pilot study, SWATH-MS approach was used to monitor extracellular vesicles-enriched saliva sub-proteome in pSS patients, revealing 121 differentially expressed proteins with 82% upregulated and 18% downregulated in pSS samples, mainly related to immune-innate response. The results highlight the usefulness of EVs for discovering novel salivary-omic biomarkers and offer new perspectives for the identification of clinically relevant proteins in pSS.

Salivary Proteome Changes in Response to Acute Psychological Stress Due to an Oral Exam Simulation in University Students: Effect of an Olfactory Stimulus

Lorenzo Zallocco et al.

Summary: The study investigated salivary proteome changes in University students under simulated oral exam stress. Significant alterations in α-amylase, PIGR, and IGHA secretion were observed after the stress test, with pleasant odor reducing the impact of acute social stress on salivary proteome changes. Saliva proteomic analysis proved to be a useful tool for evaluating rapid responses to acute stress tests and identifying known biomarkers.

Summary: Oral cancer, a deadly malignancy, is often diagnosed at a late stage, resulting in poor survival rates. Saliva, as an alternative biofluid, shows promise for non-invasive diagnostics, but further large-scale studies are needed for clinical validation.
