Characterization of High-Cycle Bending Fatigue Behaviors for Piston Aluminum Matrix SiO2 Nano-composites in Comparison with Aluminum-Silicon Alloys

Mehrdad Zolfaghari et al.

Summary: This study focused on the effect of adding nano-particles to aluminum matrix on fatigue properties, revealing that nano-particles significantly improve high-cycle fatigue lifetime due to finer grains, higher hardness, proper distribution in the aluminum matrix, and stronger bonding strength at the Al/Si interface.

Effect of Al2O3Particle Size on Mechanical Properties of Ultrasonic-Assisted Stir-Casted Al A356 Matrix Composites

Ugur Aybarc et al.

Summary: Aluminum A356 alloy matrix composites reinforced with different fractions of Al(2)O(3) particles of two different sizes were produced and examined for their mechanical properties. The addition of 0.5 wt% nano-Al(2)O(3) resulted in the highest ultimate tensile strength and elongation among all compositions, with improvements in UTS and impact energy compared to the reference sample. Quality index calculations showed that 0.5 wt% nano-Al(2)O(3) addition yielded the optimum properties.

Summary: In this study, AA2024-SiO2np nanocomposites were prepared using the vortex method, and the effects of SiO2 content on microstructural and mechanical properties were investigated. The addition of 0.5vol% of nanoparticles improved mechanical properties significantly, but increased nanoparticle agglomeration at higher concentrations led to a decrease in mechanical performance of the composite.

The rate-dependent mechanical behavior of CNT-reinforced aluminum matrix composites under tensile loading

M. Wang et al.

Summary: Aluminum composites reinforced with carbon-based nano-particles or fibers have been widely studied, but the rate dependence of their properties has been barely reported. In this study, CNTs-reinforced Al composites were investigated under different loading rates, showing increased strength and strain rate sensitivity compared to pure Al, due to improved strain hardening rates. The presence of CNTs at the interfaces and the accumulation of geometrically necessary dislocations were found to contribute to the enhanced mechanical properties of the composites.

Superplastic behavior of an in-situ TiB2 particle reinforced aluminum matrix composite processed by elliptical cross-section torsion extrusion

Shilin Zhao et al.

Summary: In this study, a severe plastic deformation method, E-TE, was used to achieve superplasticity in an in-situ TiB2/Al-Zn-Mg-Cu composite by optimizing the microstructure. Tensile tests revealed that the composite showed excellent superplastic behavior at specific temperatures and strain rates, achieving elongations up to 420%. The deformation and failure mechanisms of the composite varied with temperature, with different mechanisms observed at different temperature ranges.

Influence of wall thickness and intensification pressure on the microstructures and mechanical properties of AlSi7-SiC composites fabricated by the vacuum-assisted HPDC process

Qiyao Hu et al.

Summary: The systematic study investigated the effects of wall thickness and intensification pressure on AlSi7-SiC composites, revealing changes in microstructures and mechanical properties. Increasing wall thickness initially decreased the number of pores and changed their type, while higher intensification pressure led to more uniform distribution of SiC particles and reduced porosities. The tensile strength increased with decreased porosity, while elongation improved with thicker wall thickness.
