Experimental and numerical mechanical characterization of additively manufactured Ti6Al4V lattice structures considering progressive damage

Sven Druecker et al.

Summary: The rapid progress in additive manufacturing allows for the generation of complex structures customized for various applications. Characterizing the mechanical properties of lattice structures in design of structural parts involves understanding the selective laser melting process complexities, manufacturing imperfections, and microstructure influences. Through finite element simulations and digital image correlation, deeper insights into failure processes and comparisons between lattice structures and unit cell simulations with periodic boundary conditions have been gained.

Effects of heat treatment on microstructure and mechanical properties of selective laser melted Ti-6Al-4V lattice materials

Nan Jin et al.

Summary: The study investigates the relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties of titanium lattice materials fabricated by selective laser melting (SLM) with different heat treatments. The results show that the bending-dominated structure BCC is more sensitive to heat treatment conditions, with the optimal temperatures being 920 degrees C for BCC and 750 degrees C for FCC. A numerical simulation model was also established to depict the relationship between the mechanical properties of the base material and the lattice materials.

Characterisation and modeling of additively-manufactured polymeric hybrid lattice structures for energy absorption

Z. P. Sun et al.

Summary: Lightweight cellular materials and structures are widely used in load-bearing and energy absorption applications due to their favorable mechanical properties. Recent advances in additive manufacturing techniques have allowed for tailored architectural geometries in cellular structures. New hybrid lattice designs combining the advantages of octet and bending-dominated structures show stable post-yield stress plateau without significant sacrifice in stiffness and strength. This study suggests further enhancement of energy absorption performance in lattice structures by appropriately tuning their topological architectures.

Crashworthiness study of circular tubes subjected to radial extrusion under quasi-static loading

Suchao Xie et al.

Summary: A study was conducted on the performance of circular tubes subjected to radial extrusion under different geometrical configurations, revealing that indenters could produce axial grooves without buckling instability. Deformation and driving force-displacement responses were analyzed through numerical simulation, with effects of different geometrical configurations on crashworthiness also examined based on the validated finite element model.

Deformation and energy absorption properties of cenosphere/aluminum syntactic foam-filled circular tubes under lateral quasi-static compression

Boyi Zhang et al.

Summary: The cenosphere/aluminum syntactic foam-filled tubes exhibit a deformation mode of six plastic hinges under lateral compression. The initial peak load and specific energy absorption of the foam-filled tube increase with the decrease of the average particle size of cenospheres. The tube wall has an obvious restraint effect on the filler, but increasing the tube wall thickness will reduce the energy absorption capacity of the whole foam-filled tube.

Deformation and energy absorption properties of cenosphere-aluminum syntactic foam-filled tubes under axial compression

Li Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the performance and influencing factors of cenosphere-aluminum syntactic foam-filled tubes in compression tests were investigated, revealing the restraining effect of the tube wall on the filler and the impact of tube wall thickness on specific energy absorption. The interaction between the tube wall and filler was found to enhance the load-bearing capacity and plastic deformation ability of the syntactic foam-filled tubes.
