Human rhinovirus-specific CD8 T cell responses target conserved and unusual epitopes

Marta Gomez-Perosanz et al.

Summary: This study identified and characterized 23 conserved HRV-specific CD8 T cell epitopes on PBMCs from 14 HLA I typed subjects, confirming peptide-specific IFN gamma production and binding to the relevant HLA I for nine of these epitopes. The study also validated cytotoxicity mediated by A*02:01-restricted epitopes and discovered an unusually long 16-mer epitope peptide restricted by A*02:01. These HRV-specific CD8 T cell epitopes are expected to elicit CD8 T cell responses in up to 87% of the population and could be crucial for developing an HRV vaccine.

Mechanisms of Rhinovirus Neutralisation by Antibodies

Lila Touabi et al.

Summary: Research has identified at least five mechanisms of antibody neutralisation against rhinoviruses, with the most studied mechanisms including virion aggregation, inhibition of attachment to cells, and stabilisation or destabilisation of the capsid structure. Newer mechanisms, such as degradation inside the cell through cytoplasmic antibody detection or outside by phagocytosis, depend on what might have been previously considered as non-neutralising antibodies. These various approaches of antibody interference of rhinoviruses could potentially influence vaccine design.

Etiological and epidemiological features of acute respiratory infections in China

Zhong-Jie Li et al.

Summary: A nationwide prospective surveillance in China from 2009 to 2019 revealed that children under 5 and school-age children have the highest viral and bacterial positivity rates, with influenza virus being the most common viral pathogen and Streptococcus pneumoniae being the most common bacterial pathogen. This study emphasizes the importance of differential priorities for diagnosis, prevention, and control of acute respiratory tract infections based on patients' demographics, geographic locations, and seasonal variations in China.

Characterization of Conserved and Promiscuous Human Rhinovirus CD4 T Cell Epitopes

Marta Gomez-Perosanz et al.

Summary: This study identified 7 CD4 T cell epitopes from RV A and C serotypes, demonstrating their ability to bind to multiple HLA II molecules and be recognized by over 95% of the global population when combined. These epitopes could be crucial for monitoring RV infections and developing peptide-based vaccines against most RV A and C serotypes.
