Fast Adaptive Temperature-Based Re-Optimization Strategies for On-Line Hot Spot Suppression during Locoregional Hyperthermia

H. Petra Kok et al.

Summary: This study developed a temperature-based re-optimization strategy and compared its predicted effectiveness with clinically applied protocol/experience-based steering. The results showed that the re-optimization strategy effectively suppressed hot spots without affecting tumor temperatures, similar to clinical steering. Implementing these strategies can significantly improve the overall treatment quality within hyperthermia centers.

Hyperthermia Treatment Planning: Clinical Application and Ongoing Developments

H. Petra Kok et al.

Summary: Hyperthermia is a proven clinical anti-cancer treatment that enhances the effectiveness of radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Treatment planning, including simulation and optimization of temperature distributions, is crucial for ensuring and improving treatment quality. Ongoing developments focus on deriving patient-specific tissue properties, advanced thermal modeling, and biological modeling to predict the radiosensitizing effect of hyperthermia.

Treatment planning facilitates clinical decision making for hyperthermia treatments

H. P. Kok et al.

Summary: This paper serves as a practical guide on the application of hyperthermia treatment planning (HTP) in clinical decision making for superficial and locoregional hyperthermia treatments. It highlights seven common problems in daily clinical practice and demonstrates how HTP can enhance insight to formulate an adequate treatment strategy. By using basic simulation strategies, HTP can facilitate clinical decision making and contribute to maintaining and improving treatment quality in the long run.
