Preparation of sulfonated polyimide/polyvinyl alcohol composite membrane for vanadium redox flow battery applications

Hailin Yu et al.

Summary: By preparing and characterizing a novel series of sulfonated polyimide (SPI)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite membranes, this study showed improved performance in vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB), as evidenced by lower self-discharge rate, higher coulombic efficiency, and energy efficiency in single-cell tests. The composite membranes also exhibited stable performance for up to 100 cycles without significant decline in energy efficiency.

Tailoring the vanadium/proton ratio of electrolytes to boost efficiency and stability of vanadium flow batteries over a wide temperature range

Yongbin Liu et al.

Summary: Reducing the V/H ratio in the electrolyte can lead to higher efficiency and better cycle stability, especially suitable for a wide range of temperatures. Unlike previous studies that focused on increasing vanadium concentration to increase theoretical capacity density, a relatively low vanadium concentration is more suitable for vanadium flow batteries as it allows for safer, cheaper, and more stable operation, which is crucial for large-scale energy storage.

A novel double branched sulfonated polyimide membrane with ultra-high proton selectivity for vanadium redox flow battery

Jun Long et al.

Summary: A novel double branched sulfonated polyimide (dbSPI) membrane with high proton selectivity and ultra-low vanadium ion permeability was successfully synthesized, showing much longer self-discharge time and superior capacity retention in VRFB single cell assembly compared to the Nafion 212 membrane. The optimized dbSPI-50 membrane also demonstrated higher coulomb efficiency and energy efficiency after 300 charge-discharge tests, making it a promising candidate for VRFB applications.
