Platinum Dissolution in Realistic Fuel Cell Catalyst Layers

Konrad Ehelebe et al.

Summary: Research has shown that specific Pt dissolution increases significantly with decreasing Pt loading; compared to experiments in aqueous model systems with flow cells, the measured dissolution in GDE experiments is considerably lower; further reduction in Pt dissolution is observed by adding a membrane onto the catalyst layer.

On the Stability of Co3O4 Oxygen Evolution Electrocatalysts in Acid

Marco Etzi Coller Pascuzzi et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that Co3O4 can serve as an OER catalyst suitable for acidic conditions, with Co3O4 films on FTO glass showing stability during prolonged electrical experiments. Doping Co3O4 with Li enhances its activity under acidic conditions but compromises stability compared to undoped Co3O4.

Next-generation anion exchange membrane water electrolyzers operating for commercially relevant lifetimes

Behrooz Motealleh et al.

Summary: The use of Sustainion (R) anion exchange membranes in alkaline anion exchange membrane water electrolysis has shown good performance relative to industrial parameters, with stability and longer lifetime. Accelerated voltage shock tests were used to simulate daily cycling performance over 30 years, showing that performance can be improved by adding zirconia to the polymer matrix and mechanically reinforcing the membrane.

Elucidating the Role of Hydroxide Electrolyte on Anion-Exchange-Membrane Water Electrolyzer Performance

Jiangjin Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the functionality of alkali metal solution in AEMWEs, finding that the solution plays a crucial role in the ohmic resistance of the membrane and catalyst layer, as well as the reaction kinetics. Results suggest that the high pH of electrolyte and the catalyst/electrolyte interface are important for the performance of AEMWEs.

On the limitations in assessing stability of oxygen evolution catalysts using aqueous model electrochemical cells

Julius Knoeppel et al.

Summary: Recent research shows a severe difference in the dissolution of oxygen evolution reaction catalysts in aqueous model systems and membrane electrode assemblies. The main contributors to this dissolution discrepancy are identified as the overestimated acidity in the anode catalyst layer and the stabilization of catalysts over time in real devices.

Performance and Durability of Pure-Water-Fed Anion Exchange Membrane Electrolyzers Using Baseline Materials and Operation

Grace A. Lindquist et al.

Summary: Green hydrogen produced by water electrolysis powered by renewable electricity can replace fossil fuels. Anion-exchange-membrane (AEM) electrolyzers offer advantages of commercial proton-exchange-membrane systems with the use of less expensive materials and catalysts. Limited research and development in AEM electrolyzers due to lack of accessible materials and difficulty in comparing results, but using commercially available materials can provide a high-performance baseline for future development.

Does power ultrasound affect hydrocarbon Ionomers?

Michael Adamski et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of low-frequency high-power ultrasound on hydrocarbon-based ionomers, finding that ultrasound reduced the viscosity of polymer solutions and decreased molecular weight. Changes in polymer structure were observed under specific conditions of ultrasonication, but did not significantly impact the electrochemical performance of fuel cells.

Two routes for sonochemical synthesis of platinum nanoparticles with narrow size distribution

Henrik E. Hansen et al.

Summary: A novel sonochemical method was developed to synthesize platinum (Pt) nanoparticles with smaller and more monodisperse particles compared to traditional chemical reduction methods, by carefully manipulating ultrasonic conditions. Direct sonication resulted in impurities due to erosion of probe material and continuous supply of micrometer-sized impurities, affecting the purity of the nanoparticles. Sonication at higher frequencies was found to be more efficient and yielded nanoparticles of higher purity.
