2-biofuels (H2 and CH4) production from anaerobic digestion of biscuits wastewater: Experimental study and techno-economic analysis

Ahmed Tawfik et al.

Summary: The study investigated the use of up-flow anaerobic hybrid reactor for dual biofuels production. By utilizing solely biscuits wastewater and a mixture of biscuits wastewater with domestic sewage, different yields of biofuels were achieved. Long-term operation was found to be affected by the inhibition effect of certain substances.

Dual production of hydrogen and biochar from industrial effluent containing phenolic compounds

Mahmoud Nasr et al.

Summary: The study showed that immobilizing anaerobes onto magnetite nanoparticles significantly increased hydrogen yield and enzyme activities in the dark-fermentation process of black liquor. The conversion efficiencies of protein and carbohydrate were enhanced, while total phenolic compounds were also increased. The research outcomes were linked to bio-energy generation, pollution minimization, biochar applications, nanoparticles and paper industry development, aligning with environmental, economic, and social related sustainable development goals.

Dynamic approach for mono- and di-fermentation of black liquor and livestock wastewater for 2-bio-(H2&CH4) production

Ahmed Tawfik et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing the fraction of livestock wastewater in the feedstock could shift microbial activities towards bio-hydrogen generation, leading to significant increases in hydrogen potential, enzyme activities, and organic acid content in the digestate. Methanogens were dominant in batches with high black liquor content, while hydrogen producers were dominant in batches with equal proportions of livestock wastewater and black liquor.

Intermittent versus sequential dark-photo fermentative hydrogen production as an alternative for bioenergy recovery from protein-rich effluents

Naira Meky et al.

Summary: The study investigates the production of biohydrogen under acidic pH conditions using an intermittent dark-photo circular baffled reactor (IDP-CBR), which successfully achieved efficient hydrogen production from gelatin-based substrate. Adapted bacteria for this process were identified, and the IDP-CBR was found to outperform sequential configurations in maintaining medium pH and promoting light-dependent biohydrogen production.

Fermentation-based nanoparticle systems for sustainable conversion of black-liquor into biohydrogen

Ahmed Tawfik et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the feasibility of using black liquor from paper-making industry for bio-hydrogen production, achieving higher hydrogen yield by optimizing conditions and immobilizing anaerobes. Through techno-economic assessment, it was found that the initial investment could be recouped through a bioenergy-based project.
