Molten salt bubble columns for low-carbon hydrogen from CH4 pyrolysis: Mass transfer and carbon formation mechanisms

Brett Parkinson et al.

Summary: Methane pyrolysis in molten salts offers a potential large-scale, low-cost, and low-CO2 production route for hydrogen. Understanding the decoupling of bubble specific surface area and volume-based CH4 reaction rates provides a basis for reaction rate modeling in industrial-scale pyrolysis reactors.

Methane pyrolysis in a molten gallium bubble column reactor for sustainable hydrogen production: Proof of concept & techno-economic assessment

Brandon Jose Leal Perez et al.

Summary: Currently, nearly 50% of global hydrogen production is derived from Steam Methane Reforming (SMR), which leads to significant CO2 emissions and exacerbates global warming. The use of methane pyrolysis with melts of metals and salts produces less CO2 and offers a more sustainable route to generate hydrogen, with the added benefit of valuable carbon co-product sales potential. Techno-economic and sensitivity analyses suggest that the molten metal technology can compete with SMR if co-product carbon is saleable and a CO2 tax is imposed.

Methane decomposition to produce hydrogen and carbon nanomaterials over costless, iron-containing catalysts

Jing Xia Qian et al.

Summary: In this study, iron-containing materials from natural, industrial raw materials, by-products or wastes were investigated as catalysts for methane decomposition. The Fe2O3 species on these materials were found to be gradually reduced by methane to active Fe-0 species, which led to the formation of carbon nano-materials. The optimized reaction conditions for the highest carbon/hydrogen yield were determined to be 900 degrees C and 3 L/g(cat).h.

Methane pyrolysis in monovalent alkali halide salts: Kinetics and pyrolytic carbon properties

Brett Parkinson et al.

Summary: Methane pyrolysis in molten salts has the potential to produce low-cost, low-CO2 emission H-2 on an industrial scale, with alkali halides as liquid reaction media resulting in high purity carbon; observed activation energies are lower and purity correlates with salt compound size and salt-carbon wettability.

Co-Mn catalysts for H2 production via methane pyrolysis in molten salts

Clemens F. Patzschke et al.

Summary: The study investigates the production of CO2-free H2 from natural gas through methane pyrolysis in molten salts, identifying mixed Co-Mn catalysts as highly promising. Increasing the molar Co:Mn ratio from zero to two can enhance CH4 conversion rates. Results show that Co-rich catalysts inhibit interactions between the support and the active phase, leading to stable performance and carbon-free surfaces.

Steam Reforming of Hydrocarbons for Synthesis Gas Production

M. Fowles et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the history and technological development of steam reforming for the production of synthesis gas in Billingham, UK, along with a brief overview of catalysts, technology, and industrial operation. Additionally, newer technologies aimed at increasing efficiency and reducing environmental impact of traditional steam reforming processes are presented, such as adiabatic reforming, autothermal reforming (ATR), and gas heated reforming (GHR).
