Seyed Ali Atyabi et al.

Summary: A suitable cooling flow field design for proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) can improve the cell's net generated power and achieve steady performance and longer lifespan. Among the different flow field designs, Case D demonstrated the best temperature uniformity and the lowest maximum temperature, albeit with the highest pressure drop. Taking into account the effect of high pressure drop, Case D achieved the highest power density.

Application of porous materials for the flow field in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells

Yinghui Zhang et al.

Summary: Porous metals and carbonaceous materials are gaining attention for applications in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells as porous flow fields/distributors, offering high electrical conductivity, porosity, controllable structure, and lightweight. The porous flow distributor has been shown to distribute reactant gases more evenly and improve electrochemical performance compared to conventional ribbed flow distributors, with analyses on the impact of structural/surfacial properties and operating conditions on fuel cell performance. Challenges in performance stability of porous metal flow distributors in corrosive environments and recent advances in corrosion-resistant porous flow distributors are also discussed.

Elucidating the operating behavior of PEM fuel cell with nickel foam as cathode flow field

Huo Sen et al.

Summary: Metal foam material as an alternative flow distributor in proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell has attracted attention for its superior performance in providing uniform gas flow and accelerating water removal capability. Compared to traditional parallel flow channels, the operation of PEM fuel cell with metal foam distributor is less sensitive to cathode humidification and oxygen supply. The more uniform and effective electron transport in metal foam PEM fuel cell allows for the use of thinner gas diffusion layers.

A rheological approach to studying process-induced structural evolution of the microporous layer in a proton exchange membrane fuel cell

Shirin Mehrazi et al.

Summary: The relationship between the primary agglomerate structure in the ink and the morphological and surface properties of the dried layer is studied based on rheological properties. Samples with higher PTFE loading have a more inhomogeneous microstructure and form highly percolated agglomerates after coating. The microporous layer with a solid content of 10 wt.% and a PTFE loading of 25 wt.% is found to have an optimal morphology for oxygen transport under both dry and wet conditions. This study provides new insight into the optimization of microporous layer design and development.
