High-Rate Anisotropic Properties in Human Infant Parietal and Occipital Bone

Robert M. Metcalf et al.

Summary: Computational models of infant head impact are limited by the lack of cranial bone material property data, particularly anisotropic relationships created by trabecular fibers in infant bone. This study measured anisotropic properties of human infant cranial bone and found that bending modulus and ultimate stress significantly increased with donor age. The study emphasizes the age-dependent, anisotropic, and regionally dependent nature of pediatric skulls, which should be considered in finite element models for pediatric head injury research.
