Effect of engine operating conditions on soot layer permeability and density in diesel particulate filters

Christian Zoellner et al.

Summary: Through experiments and model analysis, it was found that exhaust mass flow rate and particle agglomerate size have an impact on the soot layer permeability and density in diesel particulate filters. The study revealed significant variations in the permeability and density of the soot layer, with specific trends identified at different operating points.

Effects of alcohol addition to traditional fuels on soot formation: A review

Yang Hua et al.

Summary: Alcohol fuels such as methanol, ethanol, butanol, and pentanol have been extensively studied as potential clean fuels to reduce soot emissions from incomplete combustion of hydrocarbon fuels. Research has shown a decreasing or synergistic effect of alcohol additions on soot formation and revealed the mechanism behind it. However, further studies are needed to understand the formation mechanism of soot in complex environments and the detailed effects of alcohols on soot production.

Oxidation behaviors and nanostructure of particulate matter produced from a diesel engine fueled with n-pentanol and 2-ethylhexyl nitrate additives

Xiaochen Wang et al.

Summary: The experiments conducted on a high pressure common-rail diesel engine using different fuel blends showed that increasing n-pentanol concentration in diesel/n-pentanol mixtures led to higher soot oxidation reactivity. The addition of EHN to DP30 fuel resulted in varying levels of soot oxidation reactivity changes. There was a nonlinear correlation between soot reactivity and nanostructure, indicating that other factors like active surface area and surface functional group could also influence soot oxidation reactivity.

Three-dimension soft X-ray tomographic reconstruction of particulates emitted from a diesel engine

Fangchao Yan et al.

Summary: This study used synchrotron soft X-ray tomography (SXT) to study the three-dimensional morphology and microstructure of PM particles emitted from a diesel engine, revealing that the agglomerates are composed of soot and condensed organic compounds, and are relatively loosely attached. The size distributions of aggregates showed no specific trend with respect to engine load and PM size, while the volume fractions of agglomerates decreased with increasing load. The population-averaged fractal dimension of agglomerates was smaller and more sensitive to engine load and PM size compared to that of aggregates.
