Fabrication of a water-retaining, slow-release fertilizer based on nanocomposite double-network hydrogels via ion-crosslinking and free radical polymerization

Yanmin Shen et al.

Summary: A new type of water-retaining, slow-release fertilizer based on double-network hydrogels was fabricated, and the presence of halloysite nanotubes clearly adjusted the swelling and release properties of the fertilizer. Kinetic modeling indicated a Fickian diffusion mechanism for the swelling and slow release behavior, suggesting good prospects for application.

Starch, cellulose, pectin, gum, alginate, chitin and chitosan derived (nano) materials for sustainable water treatment: A review

Mahmoud Nasrollahzadeh et al.

Summary: Natural biopolymers, such as cellulose, chitin/chitosan, and starch, are considered greener, sustainable, and eco-friendly materials due to their outstanding structural features, abundant availability, nontoxicity, and biocompatibility. In recent years, polysaccharides have been widely used for making various catalysts, with polysaccharides-supported metal/metal oxide materials being an effective strategy in nanotechnology. Polysaccharides adorned with nanomaterials have shown promising potential as efficient catalysts or sorbents in removing a variety of aqueous pollutants and contaminants.

Bacterial cellulose nanofibrils-reinforced composite hydrogels for mechanical compression-responsive on-demand drug release

Daehwan Park et al.

Summary: The study introduces a cellulose-reinforced hybrid hydrogel system that enhances mechanical strength and enables on-demand drug release. By incorporating bacterial cellulose nanofibers (BCNFs) into a polyacrylamide (PAM) mesh, the compression strength of the hydrogel was significantly increased. Additionally, the tailored composition of BCNFs with PAM allowed for delayed drug release compared to PAM alone while enabling drug release in response to mechanical stress.

Investigations on the impact of the introduction of the Aloe vera into the hydrogel matrix on cytotoxic and hydrophilic properties of these systems considered as potential wound dressings

S. Kudacik-Kramarczyk et al.

Summary: The paper presents the synthesis of chitosan-based hydrogels modified with Aloe vera juice for potential use in modern wound dressings. The research demonstrated that the addition of Aloe vera juice improved the hydrophilic properties of the materials, while increasing the amount of crosslinker resulted in higher contact angles of hydrogels. Modified hydrogels showed increased swelling properties compared to unmodified materials.
