Insights into bamboo delignification with acidic deep eutectic solvents pretreatment for enhanced lignin fractionation and valorization

Wen-Xin Li et al.

Summary: An acidic biomass-derived DES pretreatment was developed to enhance lignin fractionation from bamboo, resulting in lignin samples with higher thermal stability and excellent antioxidant activity. The use of acidic DES as a low-cost, high-performance delignification method with long-term durability and thermal stability is highlighted for potential applications in lignin-based chemicals and materials.

Revealing the structural characteristics of lignin macromolecules from perennial ryegrass during different integrated treatments

Shao-Fei Sun et al.

Summary: The study proposed sequential alkali extractions or double ball-milling and enzymatic hydrolysis to reveal the structural characteristics and physicochemical properties of perennial ryegrass lignin. The results showed that the two types of lignin prepared had different structures and chemical compositions, providing useful information for the efficient utilization of lignin in biorefineries.

Facile Tailoring of Structures for Controlled Release of Paracetamol from Sustainable Lignin Derived Platforms

Mario Culebras et al.

Summary: The study successfully synthesized hydrogels using lignin, a non-valorized biopolymer, crosslinked with PEGDGE. The ratio of crosslinker used influenced the structural and chemical properties of the resulting hydrogels, with increased crosslinker amount leading to smaller pore size and higher swelling capacity. Paracetamol release test showed higher drug diffusion for hydrogels produced with a lignin:PEGDGE ratio of 1:1.

Innovative production of lignin nanoparticles using deep eutectic solvents for multifunctional nanocomposites

Tong Luo et al.

Summary: A green and simple lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) production strategy was developed using deep eutectic solvents (DES), forming uniform size and spherical LNPs from corncob alkali lignin. Incorporating LNPs into biodegradable poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrix resulted in nanocomposite films with excellent mechanical properties, UV-blocking, hydrophobicity, and thermal stability. This study not only advances lignin-based nanotechnology by DES, but also opens up possibilities for using PVA polymer composites as food and medical packaging materials.

Carboxymethylation of polysaccharide isolated from Alkaline Peroxide Mechanical Pulping (APMP) waste liquor and its bioactivity

Ting Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, polysaccharides extracted from eucalyptus pulping waste liquor were used to produce carboxymethyl polysaccharide. The study investigated the effects of preparation conditions on the degree of substitution and characterized the structure and molecular weight of the polysaccharide. It was found that carboxymethyl substitution was successful and the positions of the substituent group were determined. The carboxymethyl xylan polysaccharide showed better biological activity compared to xylan polysaccharide.

Effect of organosolv extraction on the structure and antioxidant activity of eucalyptus kraft lignin

Xiaoxiao Wei et al.

Summary: In this study, three lignin fractions were extracted from eucalyptus kraft lignin using different solvents and characterized for their antioxidant activity. The ethyl acetate fraction showed the highest antioxidant activity with high homogeneity and phenolic hydroxyl content. Solvent extraction was found to be an effective way to obtain lignin fractions with high antioxidant activity and potential higher value applications.
