Effect of the addition of cassava fibers on the properties of cassava starch composite films

Guilherme Ribeiro de Carvalho et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the feasibility of using cassava bagasse in the production of composite cassava starch-based films and showed that the cassava bagasse content significantly affected the film properties, resulting in increased tensile strength and reduced water vapor permeability. The fibers in cassava bagasse played a key role in improving the mechanical and barrier properties of the films.

Characterization of physicochemical and antimicrobial properties of plasma-treated starch/chitosan composite film

Zhian Sheikhi et al.

Summary: The study found that argon plasma treatment was more effective in improving the tensile strength of the films, while air plasma treatment was better at enhancing the stretchability of the films. After argon treatment, the solubility and hydrophilicity of the films increased, and oxygen permeability also improved.

Preparation and characterization of octenyl succinic anhydride modified waxy maize starch hydrolyzate/chitosan complexes with enhanced interfacial properties

Tian Xu et al.

Summary: Preparation and characterization of colloidal complexes based on OSA-S and CS showed that the turbidities, yields, microstructure, wettability, and interfacial adsorption dynamics of the complexes were significantly influenced by the OSA-S/CS ratio and pH. The complexes exhibited liquid-like or gel structure, with intertwined core-shell microstructure and electrostatic interactions between COO- and NH3+ groups. The complexes prepared at r = 6:1 and pH 6.0 showed the most suitable wettability and interfacial adsorption dynamics.

Nopal cladode as a novel reinforcing and antioxidant agent for starch-based films: A comparison with lignin and propolis extract

Patricia Marques de Farias et al.

Summary: The potential use of nopal cladode flour as reinforcing/bioactive agent in cassava starch-based films was evaluated, with NC12 and NC showing similar effects on the mechanical properties of the films but differing in their performance as reinforcing and antioxidant agents. NC12 exhibited superior qualities in terms of elongation, hydrophobicity, water vapor permeability, and antioxidant activity, making it a promising option for active biodegradable packaging for food preservation with high oxidation rate.

Fabrication and characterization of starch films containing chitosan nanoparticles using in situ precipitation and mechanoactivation techniques

I. M. Lipatova et al.

Summary: The study introduces a new environmentally friendly process for producing starch films with submicron chitosan particles through mechanoactivated in situ precipitation and magnesium sulfate as a crosslinker. Increasing particle concentration to 10% had minimal impact on film strength but significantly increased elongation. The composite films demonstrated smooth, uniformly translucent surfaces and lower moisture absorption and water vapor permeability compared to starch films.

Ultrasonic-assisted synthesis of SiO2 nanoparticles and SiO2/chitosan/Fe nanocomposite and their application for vanadium adsorption from aqueous solution

Hakimeh Sharififard et al.

Summary: Natural SiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized from brown rice husk via sonochemical method and used for vanadium adsorption. SiO2/CH/Fe nanocomposite showed high adsorption capacity and predominance of chemical adsorption, with a mono-layer adsorption capacity of 199.540 mg g(-1). Results indicated a single layer, exothermic adsorption process, making it a promising industrial adsorbent.
