Analysis of a forging die wear by 3D reverse scanning combined with SEM and hardness tests

M. Hawryluk et al.

Summary: This study combines non-contact measurement 3D scanning techniques with a study of microstructure of forging dies to analyze changes in tool surface and identify destructive mechanisms. The developed reverse 3D scanning method has been repeatedly verified by the authors and confirmed by numerous studies and applications. The method enables direct quality control and examination of changes in surface layer geometry of forging dies, leading to significant economical savings.

Further Development of Wear Calculation and Wear Reduction in Cold Forging Processes

Bernd-Arno Behrens et al.

Summary: This research focuses on developing a numerical wear calculation based on an adapted Archard model to predict tool wear realistically in cold forging processes. Validation of the numerical wear calculation model is done through material characterization of the workpiece material and investigation of worn tool dies. Identifying critical areas and modifying the inlet geometry of the tool die are key strategies to reduce wear.
