Hydrocarbon accumulation in basins with multiple phases of extension and inversion: examples from the Western Desert (Egypt) and the western Black Sea

William Bosworth et al.

Summary: In many basins, folds associated with inverted extensional faults are important exploration targets. Factors such as crestal breaching and erosion of top seal can lead to failure to trap hydrocarbons in inversion structures. However, in rift basins with multi-phase histories, new top seals can be deposited following inversion events, potentially enhancing hydrocarbon maturation and success rates. Understanding the complex sequence of extensional and contractional events in a basin is essential for formulating successful exploration strategies.
