Comparative study of Vertucci and Ahmed classifications to evaluate the main root canal configuration of mandibular incisors in a Brazilian population

Nata'lia Villa et al.

Summary: In a Brazilian population, the majority of mandibular incisors (MI) had a single root canal, with Type III Vertucci and (MI1-2-1)-M-1 Ahmed et al. being the most common 2-canal MI configuration. The distribution of canals in the apical, cervical, and middle thirds varied, with Ahmed et al. classification being able to classify the entire sample studied.

The efficacy of five different techniques in identifying C-shaped canals in mandibular molars

Atefeh Baghbani et al.

Summary: This study compared five different methods for identifying C-shaped canal configuration and found that high-resolution CBCT exhibited the highest accuracy, while periapical radiography had the lowest. However, all approaches were useful in reaching a correct diagnosis, with CBCT, especially the low-resolution modality, being an effective technique in diagnosing C-shaped canal anatomy.

Micro-tomographic characterization of the root and canal system morphology of mandibular first premolars in a Chilean population

Alfredo Sierra-Cristancho et al.

Summary: The root anatomy and root canal system morphology of mandibular first premolars in a Chilean population showed a wide range of anatomical variations. Teeth with multiple root canals had a higher incidence of radicular grooves, which were closely related to more complex internal anatomy. Tomes' anomalous root was only present in teeth with multiple root canals.

Assessment of the Metal Artifact Reduction Tool for the Detection of Root Isthmus in Mandibular Molars with Intraradicular Posts in Cone-beam Computed Tomographic Scans

Manuela Lima Barros de Oliveira et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of a metal artifact reduction (MAR) tool in cone-beam computed tomographic scans for detecting root isthmus in mandibular molars with different intraradicular posts. The results showed that the size of the field of view (FOV) did not affect the tool's performance, with disabled and low modes of MAR tool showing higher accuracy values for metal and fiberglass post groups. The study suggests that normal and high modes of the MAR tool are not recommended for this purpose.

Application of a new system for classifying root and canal anatomy in studies involving micro-computed tomography and cone beam computed tomography: Explanation and elaboration

H. M. A. Ahmed et al.

Summary: Adequate knowledge and accurate characterization of root and canal anatomy are crucial for successful root canal treatment. A new coding system has been introduced to classify root and canal morphology, accessory canals, and anomalies. Micro-CT and CBCT have been extensively used to study root and canal anatomy, and this review aims to discuss the application of the new coding system and provide a detailed guide for appropriate characterization.

Contrast-enhanced nano-CT reveals soft dental tissues and cellular layers

T. Hildebrand et al.

Summary: The methodology introduced in this study utilizes phosphotungstic acid (PTA) as a contrast-enhancement agent to visualize dental ultrastructures, including cellular and soft tissue components, by performing high-resolution nano-CT scans. The staining protocol allows for the concomitant visualization of hard tissues along with cellular layers and soft tissues in teeth.

Root and canal morphology of the anterior permanent dentition in Malaysian population using two classification systems: A CBCT clinical study

Mohmed Isaqali Karobari et al.

Summary: This study utilized CBCT images to evaluate the root canal morphology of permanent anteriors in a Malaysian population, finding that mandibular anterior teeth were predominantly single-rooted. Variations in mandibular incisor canals were more common in males and the 20-30 age group, with the Malay ethnic group showing a higher prevalence of variations in mandibular incisors.

Guidelines for Micro-Computed Tomography Analysis of Rodent Dentoalveolar Tissues

Michael B. Chavez et al.

Summary: Micro-computed tomography (μCT) is widely used in life sciences, but lack of standardized protocols can make it difficult to interpret results. Techniques for successfully analyzing rodent dentoalveolar tissues with different compositions and characteristics have been introduced. Practical guidelines and illustrative examples are provided to increase transparency and reproducibility in μCT analysis.
