Dying, Death and Mourning amid COVID-19 Pandemic in Kashmir: A Qualitative Study

Summary: This study used a qualitative approach to examine the changing nature of death, dying and mourning among Muslims of Kashmir as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings revealed that most of the deceased died in isolation, without anyone around. The lack of in-person support during the mourning process and the inability to perform last rites prolonged grief among the bereaved and affected their overall well-being.

Summary: This article conducted a rapid review on the impact of funeral practices during the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health and bereavement outcomes of the bereaved. The current evidence is inconclusive, but qualitative research suggests that the ability of the bereaved to shape the funeral rituals and say goodbye in a meaningful way is beneficial. The role of funeral officiants during the pandemic is highlighted, and further research is needed to better understand the experiences and consequences of grief and bereavement during COVID-19.

Why Couldn't I Go in To See Him? Bereaved Families' Perceptions of End-of-Life Communication During COVID-19

Summary: This study examined bereaved families' perceptions of end-of-life communication in VA medical centers during the COVID-19 pandemic, identifying contextual factors and characteristics of high-quality communication. Families valued staff availability for remote communication, timely updates on patient condition and care plan. Low-quality communication caused profound distress and affected the quality of dying and bereavement. Innovative strategies are needed to ensure high-quality communication despite pandemic-related visitation restrictions.
