Anticatalytic Strategies to Suppress Water Electrolysis in Aqueous Batteries

Yiming Sui et al.

Summary: Aqueous electrolytes are a promising candidate for safe and low-cost storage batteries, but the narrow electrochemical stability window of water poses challenges for the development of high-energy aqueous batteries. Electrolysis of water leads to HER and OER, causing inefficiency, short device lifespan, and safety issues. Understanding the mechanisms of HER and OER and addressing water electrolysis suppression are critical for the future advancement of aqueous battery technology.

Molten salt synthesis of samarium borides with controllable stoichiometry and morphology

Xiyan Liu et al.

Summary: Samarium borides with controllable stoichiometry and morphology were synthesized by reacting samarium halides with NaBH4 in molten LiCl-KCl, leading to the formation of SmB4 nanorods and SmB6 nanocubes. The transformation from film-shaped SmB4 to cubic SmB6 was mediated by partial reduction of Sm3+ to Sm2+ in the presence of excess NaBH4, as evidenced by XRD and SEM results. The paramagnetic properties of the synthesized nanorods and nanocubes in molten salt were similar to those obtained by other methods, showcasing the potential for facile synthesis of lanthanide borides under mild conditions.

Pressure-promoted highly-ordered Fe-doped-Ni2B for effective oxygen evolution reaction and overall water splitting

Ruifeng Tian et al.

Summary: Accurate doping at special atomic sites can effectively control the active centers for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Doping Fe/Co into Ni2B forms highly ordered FeNiB and CoNiB electrocatalysts, which exhibit low overpotential and high water splitting potential. The substitution of Fe atoms in Ni2B increases the electronic conductivity and catalytic performance, leading to enhanced OER efficiency.
