Residential Greenspace in Childhood Reduces Risk of Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Population-Based Cohort Study

Michael Elten et al.

Summary: The study found that higher exposure to residential greenspace during childhood was associated with a reduced risk of pediatric-onset IBD. This association was significant for both ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. There was no consistent association between maternal intrapartum greenspace exposure and pediatric-onset IBD.

Long-term biodiversity intervention shapes health-associated commensal microbiota among urban day-care children

Marja Roslund et al.

Summary: This 2-year study found that biodiversity intervention in day-care centers led to an increase in nonpathogenic environmental mycobacteria in surface soils and changes in bacterial community composition in skin and saliva of children. The intervention enriched commensal microbiota, reduced potentially pathogenic bacteria on the skin, and altered the relative abundance of certain bacteria associated with immune regulation. Future studies should expand intervention strategies to immune response and immune-mediated diseases.

Reduction of traditional food consumption in Brazilian diet: trends and forecasting of bean consumption (2007-2030)

Fernanda S. Granado et al.

Summary: The study identified changes in traditional dietary behavior by evaluating trends in bean consumption among adults in Brazil from 2007 to 2017. Regular consumption of beans showed a stable trend for the total population but decreased significantly from 2012 to 2017. By 2025, regular consumption of beans will no longer be the predominant habit in the country.

Climate change and global issues in allergy and immunology

Susan E. Pacheco et al.

Summary: The steady increase in global temperatures, resulting from the combustion of fossil fuels and the accumulation of greenhouse gases (GHGs), continues to destabilize all ecosystems worldwide. Efforts to curb GHG emissions fall short of commitments made, leading to record-breaking temperatures in July 2021. The impacts of climate change are already evident, calling for stronger mitigation and adaptation measures to protect our health and the planet.

Sun-induced production of vitamin D3 throughout 1 year in tropical and subtropical regions: relationship with latitude, cloudiness, UV-B exposure and solar zenith angle

Angela C. G. B. Leal et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the differences in vitamin D-3 synthesis at different latitudes over the course of a year, finding a strong correlation between vitamin D-3 production and UV-B radiation and solar zenith angle. Vitamin D-3 synthesis was found to be higher at lower latitudes, starting later in winter.

Duccio Rocchini et al.

Summary: The paper introduces a new R package called rasterdiv to calculate heterogeneity indices based on remotely sensed data, which can be used to study ecological functions, diversity patterns, population dynamics, and other ecological issues. This package is rooted in Information Theory, providing reliable calculation methods to reveal hidden heterogeneity patterns.

Understanding Asthma and Allergies by the Lens of Biodiversity and Epigenetic Changes

Bianca Sampaio Dotto Fiuza et al.

Summary: Exposure to different organisms can induce epigenetic changes affecting immune responses, potentially increasing susceptibility to inflammatory diseases. These changes, related to allergic diseases, may differ based on genetic backgrounds and influence different asthma or allergy phenotypes.
