In-depth characterization of the aggregation state of cellulose nanocrystals through analysis of transmission electron microscopy images

Cristina Campano et al.

Summary: This study proposed a method to quantify the dispersion of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) by classifying aggregates detected in transmission electron microscopy images using k-Means. The classification was based on geometric features, and the change in cluster elements after sonication was used to characterize CNC dispersion. This approach could serve as a standard for assessing the aggregation state of CNCs.

Monitoring fibrillation in the mechanical production of lignocellulosic micro/nanofibers from bleached spruce thermomechanical pulp

Ferran Serra-Parareda et al.

Summary: This study assessed the main characteristics of lignocellulosic micro/nanofibers from bleached thermomechanical pulp while considering cationic demand as an effective monitoring parameter of the fibrillation process. The mechanically treated pulp was passed through a high-pressure homogenizer to produce different fibrillation degrees of LCMNF, with CD identified as a robust parameter for monitoring the process. WRV was found to not be a reliable indicator of fibrillation extent due to lignin content variations.
