The key physiology and molecular responses to potassium deficiency in Neolamarckia cadamba

Yi Liu et al.

Summary: Potassium is an essential macronutrient for plant growth, and its deficiency affects Neolamarckia cadamba severely. In response to low K+ stress, N. cadamba showed reduced biomass, chlorophyll levels, and photosynthetic ability, with increased lignification and thicker cell walls. The transcriptome analysis revealed upregulation of K+ uptake and transport genes in roots, while receptor-like protein kinase genes were mostly down-regulated in roots and upregulated in stems and leaves under low K+ conditions. Additionally, genes related to ROS scavenging and lignification pathways were upregulated.
