Summary: Tannin, a natural water-soluble polyphenol present in most plant cells, is widely accepted and applied as a plant-based coagulant in water and wastewater treatment, effectively removing pollutants such as turbidity, colorants, suspended solids, chemical oxygen demand, algae, and heavy metals. The effectiveness of tannins as a coagulant is associated with their chemical structure and the degree of tannin modification, which are influenced by the plant source from which they are extracted.
