3D Microstructure Reconstruction of Bamboo Fiber and Parenchyma Cell

Wenwang Wu et al.

Summary: In this study, synchrotron radiation absorption and phase-contrast X-ray tomographic microscopy techniques were utilized to observe and identify the 3D features of bamboo fiber and parenchyma cells. The 3D reconstruction provided necessary parameters for understanding the mechanical and biological functions of bamboo.

Hydrophobic treatment of bamboo with rosin

Na Su et al.

Summary: The study successfully improved the hydrophobicity of bamboo by using rosin, reducing water uptake and swelling coefficient while decreasing surface wettability. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that rosin formed a continuous and uniform film on the bamboo surface.

Enhanced mechanical energy conversion with selectively decayed wood

Jianguo Sun et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated a method to increase the piezoelectric output of balsa wood over 55 times by enhancing its elastic compressibility through fungal decay pretreatment. This is a fundamental step towards developing next-generation self-powered green building materials to address energy supply and climate change challenges.

Xylem network connectivity and embolism spread in grapevine(Vitis vinifera L.)

Jay Wason et al.

Summary: This study reconstructed and simulated grapevine xylem networks, finding that the mean pit area per intervessel connection was constant and short segments failed to capture complete network connectivity. Simulations showed that xylem network organization can increase stem resistance to embolism spread.
