Coal direct chemical looping process: 250 kW pilot-scale testing for power generation and carbon capture

Yitao Zhang et al.

Summary: Chemical looping combustion (CLC) and coal-direct chemical looping (CDCL) are promising technologies for generating concentrated CO2 streams and reducing energy consumption and costs in power generation. The CDCL pilot unit testing using iron based oxygen carriers successfully achieved high coal conversion rates and confirmed the concept's potential for coal combustion with CO2 capture.

CFD-DEM modelling of the migration of fines in suspension flow through a solid packed bed

Zhouzun Xie et al.

Summary: In this work, a smoothed volume distribution model (SVDM) was developed to simulate the migration of fines in suspension flow through a solid packed bed based on the unresolved CFD-DEM framework. The SVDM method allows a high-resolution mesh and can achieve a high efficiency and applicability compared to the DPVM method. The effects of inlet fine concentration and solid/fine size ratio on fines migration behavior were also studied, revealing insights into fine powder holdup and migration mechanisms.

Numerical study of fine particles behaviors in a packed bed with lateral injection using CFD-DEM

Heng Zhou et al.

Summary: The numerical study of gas-fine flow in a packed bed with lateral injection provides insights into the distribution and clogging behaviors of fine particles. Various variables such as diameter ratio, mass flux of fine particles, and rolling frictional coefficient impact the behavior of fine particles in the packed bed. The results indicate that changes in these variables lead to differences in the clustering and dispersion of fine particles in the packed bed.

A machine learning-based interaction force model for non-spherical and irregular particles in low Reynolds number incompressible flows

Soohwan Hwang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the interaction force of non-spherical particles in low Reynolds number gas-solid flow using neural network approaches. A model is developed to extract particle shapes and predict interaction forces accurately without heavy computation. The model enables unsupervised extraction of non-spherical particle shapes and can be applied to computational fluid dynamics simulations on a large scale.

Model Reduction Applied to Empirical Models for Biomass Gasification in Downdraft Gasifiers

Michael Binns et al.

Summary: Various modeling approaches have been suggested for gasification processes, including complex models and simpler models like thermodynamic equilibrium and empirical models. This study develops linear and quadratic expressions based on gasifier input parameters using linear regression, and identifies significant parameters with a LASSO shrinkage method for simpler models with reasonable accuracy.
