Selective Hydrogenation of C=C bond in Cinnamaldehyde on Pd Step Sites of Pd/Al2O3

Kazumasa Murata et al.

Summary: There is a positive correlation between the C=C selective hydrogenation activity of cinnamaldehyde (CAL) and the fraction of the Pd step site on Pd nanoparticles. Due to a high fraction of step sites, Pd/theta-Al2O3 catalysts with Pd particle size of 5-10 nm exhibit high activity for the C=C selective hydrogenation of CAL.

A Comparison of Experimental Procedures for the Application of Infrared Spectroscopy to Probe the Surface Morphology of an Alumina-Supported Palladium Catalyst

A. M. McCullagh et al.

Summary: Structure/function relationships in heterogeneous catalysis are crucial for catalyst design, and the combination of infrared spectroscopy with chemisorption of probe molecules can provide important information on the metal crystallite morphology of supported metal catalysts. Experimental arrangements for investigating CO adsorption on a 5wt% Pd/Al2O3 catalyst using various sampling options and spectrometers show comparable spectra with some differences observed, particularly in the resolution of linear CO bound to Pd particles on one platform. This sub-division of terminal sites has implications for selective hydrogenation reactions.

Support-Induced unusual size dependence of Pd catalysts in chemoselective hydrogenation of para-chloronitrobenzene

Xiaohui Zhang et al.

Summary: Pd nanoparticles supported on oxygen-functionalized carbon black exhibit an unexpected inverse trend of selectivity compared to those on carbon black. The balance of positive Pd delta+ species strongly modulates the competitive adsorption of different groups on the substrate, affecting the chemoselectivity of the catalytic reaction.
