Bacterial Diversity and Community Structure of a Municipal Solid Waste Landfill: A Source of Lignocellulolytic Potential

Ogechukwu Bose Chukwuma et al.

Summary: Omics technology was used to analyze the microbial community in a landfill, revealing high bacterial diversity and significant influence of temperature and moisture content. PICRUSt analysis provided insights into the community's metabolic functions, particularly focusing on lignocellulolytic enzymes. These results contribute to understanding the dominant organisms in landfills and the enzymes involved in lignocellulose breakdown.

Community diversity metrics, interactions, and metabolic functions of bacteria associated with municipal solid waste landfills at different maturation stages

Lerato Sekhohola-Dlamini et al.

Summary: The study found that the bacterial community in the 14-year-old landfill had higher diversity, dominated by copiotrophs associated with positive cooccurrence interactions; whereas the bacterial community in the 36-year-old landfill was mainly lithotrophs linked to negative coexclusion interactions, greatly reducing bacterial diversity and richness.

Integrating anaerobic digestion of potato peels to methanol production by methanotrophs immobilized on banana leaves

Sanjay K. S. Patel et al.

Summary: Potato peels were used for anaerobic digestion to produce biogas, which was then used for methanol production by methanotrophs. Immobilized Methylocella tundrae on banana leaves showed high methanol production stability.

Continuous biohydrogen production from poplar biomass hydrolysate by a defined bacterial mixture immobilized on lignocellulosic materials under non-sterile conditions

Sanjay K. S. Patel et al.

Summary: This study focused on continuous production of H-2 from poplar biomass using a immobilized state mixed culture under non-sterile conditions. The results showed a steady H-2 yield over a period of 40 days, which was significantly higher compared to traditional single bacterial cultures. This approach has the potential to meet the increasing demand for cleaner energy-rich fuels in a sustainable manner.

Integrating strategies for sustainable conversion of waste biomass into dark-fermentative hydrogen and value-added products

Sanjay K. S. Patel et al.

Summary: The inefficient waste management and associated environmental pollution deplete precious renewable resources and have negative impacts on human health and the global economy. By utilizing microbial anaerobic digestion, organic matter can be metabolized into energy-rich methane and carbon dioxide, producing eco-friendly and biodegradable value-added products. Despite some challenges, integrating different processes for H2 production and waste management could lead to a sustainable economy transition.

Microbial community composition and metabolic functions in landfill leachate from different landfills of China

Renxin Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the microbial community composition and metabolic functions in landfill leachate from 11 cities in China using Illumina MiSeq high-throughput sequencing. The results showed significant differences in microbial diversity and structure among the leachate samples. Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and Proteobacteria were the dominant microbial communities, with diverse bacterial genera associated with various functions. The study provides important insights into the composition and functional characteristics of microbial communities in landfill leachate.
