Perceptual Quality Assessment of HEVC and VVC Standards for 8K Video

Summary: This paper provides a comparative subjective quality evaluation between the versatile video coding (VVC) and high efficiency video coding (HEVC) standards for 8K resolution videos. The results show that VVC offers an average of around 41% bitrate reduction over HEVC for the same visual quality and achieves a compression gain of 50% for certain tested video sequences. Additionally, significant visual differences between uncompressed 4K and 8K have been noticed in most tested scenes.
