Divergence Distance Based Index for Discriminating Inrush and Internal Fault Currents in Power Transformers

Mohsen Tajdinian et al.

Summary: This article proposes a new algorithm based on Kullback-Leibler divergence (KLD) for discriminating inrush and internal fault currents in power transformers. By utilizing the discrepancy of current signal distribution with ideal fault current waveforms, the algorithm generates a differential current signal and applies it to the KLD indicator for discrimination. Additionally, an internal/external identification index is introduced to distinguish internal and external faults based on the phase content of signals, especially in cases of CT saturation.
