Towards Optimal Energy Efficiency in Cell-Free Massive MIMO Systems

Anastasios Papazafeiropoulos et al.

Summary: The study focuses on optimizing the energy efficiency of CF mMIMO systems by deriving a lower bound on the DL average achievable spectral efficiency with the help of stochastic geometry tools and considering a realistic power consumption model. The analytical determination of the optimal pilot reuse factor, AP density, and the number of AP antennas and users that maximize the EE provides useful design guidelines for CF mMIMO systems. It is shown that larger values of pilot reuse factor and AP density result in increased interference and lower EE, while CF mMIMO technology has the potential to achieve high SE and EE simultaneously in next-generation networks.
