A Power Saving Scheme for IEEE 802.15.3d THz Wireless Communication Links

Summary: The Terahertz (THz) band, spanning from 0.1 to 10 THz, fills the gap between millimeter waves and Infrared bands and will play a significant role in addressing the spectrum resources shortage caused by the exponential growth of services and wireless devices. Standardization efforts are underway under the IEEE 802.15 project to regulate the utilization of the THz band. Despite its generous bandwidth, THz communications face challenges such as high pathloss and attenuation due to Molecular Absorption, which necessitates the use of additional power, suitable antennas, and advanced signal processing techniques. This paper proposes a new operating mode for the IEEE standard 802.15 to optimize power, modulation scheme, and channel allocation, thereby reducing power transmission requirements and achieving the desired data rate while maintaining a minimum quality-of-service. The design also takes into account the impact of humidity on system performance.
