Does race or ethnicity play a role in the origin, pathophysiology, and outcomes of preeclampsia? An expert review of the literature

Jasmine D. Johnson et al.

Summary: Preeclampsia burden disproportionately affects racial and ethnic minority groups, with race not being a biological construct. Clinical risk factors for preeclampsia have a disproportionate impact on certain populations, but addressing modifiable risk factors does not have the same protective effect for all women.

Cardiovascular Health After Preeclampsia: Patient and Provider Perspective

Ellen W. Seely et al.

Summary: There is a lack of awareness and action to prevent cardiovascular disease after preeclampsia, with patients suggesting a clinician checklist, enhanced training, and post-delivery appointments. Clinical programs focus on the first postpartum year, recommending risk modification through regular screenings. Recommendations from national organizations aim to guide management of women with prior preeclampsia.

Prediction of Preeclampsia-Related Adverse Outcomes With the sFlt-1 (Soluble fms-Like Tyrosine Kinase 1)/PlGF (Placental Growth Factor)-Ratio in the Clinical Routine A Real-World Study

Lisa Antonia Droge et al.

Summary: This retrospective real-world study investigated the clinical utility of sFlt-1/PlGF ratio in predicting adverse outcomes in patients with signs and symptoms of preeclampsia. The study found that patients classified as high or intermediate risk based on the ratio were more likely to have adverse outcomes, and combining biomarker measurements with all available clinical information improved detection of adverse outcomes in women with suspected disease.

Furosemide for Accelerated Recovery of Blood Pressure Postpartum in Women with a Hypertensive Disorder of Pregnancy A Randomized Controlled Trial

Joana Lopes Perdigao et al.

Summary: This study suggests that a short course of postpartum furosemide significantly improves blood pressure control in women with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, particularly among those without severe disease. The use of furosemide reduced the risk of persistent hypertension at 7 days postpartum and shortened the days to resolution of hypertension, without significant differences in readmissions or need for additional antihypertensive medication between groups.

A Critical Review on the Use of Race in Understanding Racial Disparities in Preeclampsia

Henrietta O. Fasanya et al.

Summary: Black and African-American women consistently face higher risks of preeclampsia incidence, morbidity, and mortality compared to white women. Asian women tend to have a lower risk of preeclampsia, while the association for Hispanic women remains unclear. Subdividing broad racial categories by geographic or cultural origin reveals disparities within racial groups, suggesting that sub-Saharan African immigrants may have a higher risk of preeclampsia compared to US-born white populations, but lower than US-born Black women. However, existing studies on racial differences in analytes have limitations and often simplify race as a proxy for biological differences without exploring other possible explanatory mechanisms.
