Hepatitis B Virus-Telomerase Reverse Transcriptase Promoter Integration Harnesses Host ELF4, Resulting in Telomerase Reverse Transcriptase Gene Transcription in Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Karen Man-Fong Sze et al.

Summary: The study found that HBV integrations are frequent in HCC tumors and are associated with increased TERT mRNA expression and more aggressive tumor behavior. Specifically, integration at the TERT promoter by HBV enhancer I (EnhI) led to TERT activation. Additionally, the E74 like ETS transcription factor 4 (ELF4) was identified as a key factor in driving telomerase activation in HCC cells through interaction with HBV.
