Impact of Preoperative Immunonutrition on the Outcomes of Colon Cancer Surgery Results from a Randomized Controlled Trial

Soo Young Lee et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of preoperative immunonutrition on the outcomes of colon cancer surgery. The results showed that preoperative immunonutrition was not associated with infectious complications in patients undergoing colon cancer surgery. Therefore, routine administration of immunonutrition before colon cancer surgery cannot be justified.

A prospective study of erythrocyte polyunsaturated fatty acids and risk of colorectal serrated polyps and conventional adenomas

Liang Wang et al.

Summary: The study indicates that erythrocyte PUFAs in a typical American diet are unlikely to have a substantial influence on the risk of colorectal cancer precursors. However, certain PUFAs may be associated with different types of colorectal polyp risks. Further confirmation is needed for subgroup associations.

Cyclooxygenase activity mediates colorectal cancer cell resistance to the omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid eicosapentaenoic acid

Summary: Research showed that inhibiting cyclooxygenase could increase the sensitivity of colorectal cancer cells to growth inhibition by EPA, but intra-tumoral COX inhibition is critical for this drug-nutrient interaction.

The gut bacterium Extibacter muris produces secondary bile acids and influences liver physiology in gnotobiotic mice

Theresa Streidl et al.

Summary: Extibacter muris, a newly described mouse gut bacterium, produces secondary bile acids in vivo that affect the liver proteomes. It has minor effects on the Oligo-MM12 community under a high-fat diet, but does not influence body weight and other physiological parameters.

Red Blood Cell Fatty Acids and Risk of Colorectal Cancer in The European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC)

Jakob Linseisen et al.

Summary: In a case-control study nested within a large prospective cohort, higher concentration of RBC stearic acid was associated with increased risk of colorectal cancer, while higher proportions of RBC n-3 PUFA, particularly EPA, were linked to decreased incidence of colorectal cancer. The findings suggest a potential protective effect of fish consumption on colorectal cancer risk.

Blood n-3 fatty acid levels and total and cause-specific mortality from 17 prospective studies

Summary: The study found that higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids in the blood are associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality, particularly with long chain omega-3 fatty acids. This association may help reduce the risk of death from cardiovascular disease, cancer, and other causes.

Gael Nana et al.

Summary: Oral administration of omega-3 PUFAs leads to increased luminal omega-3 PUFA concentrations and changes to the microbiome in the ileum of individuals with a temporary ileostomy. There is large variability in ileal microbiome over time and between individuals, with no consistent change associated with acute omega-3 PUFA dosing.

Summary: The study demonstrates that higher genetically predicted plasma phospholipid AA concentrations are associated with increased risk of colorectal and lung cancer, and possibly esophageal cancer. Treatment strategies aiming to lower plasma AA concentrations should be evaluated for clinical benefit.
