Expanding the Boundary of Biorefinery: Organonitrogen Chemicals from Biomass

Xi Chen et al.

Summary: Organonitrogen chemicals play crucial roles in pharmaceutical and agricultural products, but current industrial processes rely on nonrenewable resources, urging the need to develop sustainable alternatives. Biomass, as the largest renewable carbon resource, offers a promising solution to integrate into the organonitrogen chemical supply chain for reducing carbon footprint and enhancing economic competitiveness.

Electro-optic spatial light modulator from an engineered organic layer

Ileana-Cristina Benea-Chelmus et al.

Summary: Researchers have developed an SLM device based on organic electro-optic materials that can manipulate individual pixel properties at speeds up to 50 MHz, offering potential applications in imaging and spectroscopy. These materials exhibit high nonlinearity, custom-tailored nonlinear tensors at the nanoscale, and have broad applications in active free-space optics, such as remote monitoring and virtual or augmented reality. The compatibility with compact laser diodes, achieved millimeter size, and low power consumption make them suitable for laser ranging and reconfigurable optics.

Pharmaceutically relevant (hetero)cyclic compounds and natural products from lignin-derived monomers: Present and perspectives

Anastasiia Afanasenko et al.

Summary: Lignin, as the richest source of renewable aromatics on Earth, holds great potential for efficient depolymerization methods to produce specific monophenol derivatives, providing a foundation for downstream conversion strategies towards a wide range of products. The inherent structural features of lignin-derived platform chemicals inspire novel synthetic routes for the production of biologically active molecules or natural products. Efforts are being made to develop entire value-chains from wood to valuable pharmaceutically relevant compounds.

Insight into the roles of ammonia during direct alcohol amination over supported Ru catalysts

Xin-Pu Fu et al.

Summary: The presence of dissociated ammonia species on Ru nanoparticles enhances its catalytic activity in the dehydrogenation step during amination. In contrast to Pd-based catalysts, the N atom in the generated R-NH2 product binds strongly with Ru sites, inhibiting the formation of undesired secondary amine. This work reveals the overlooked role of ammonia in the amination reaction over Ru-based catalysts.

Understanding the effects of solvents on the hydrogenation of toluene over supported Pd and Ru catalysts

Shiling Zhao et al.

Summary: The study found that n-hexane had a small impact on the catalysts, while THF and methanol significantly inhibited the hydrogenation activity of toluene. In addition, IPA, despite strong adsorption on the catalysts, exhibited a hydrogen transfer effect that promoted the conversion of toluene.

Disassembling catechyl and guaiacyl/syringyl lignins coexisting in Euphorbiaceae seed coats

Shihao Su et al.

Summary: The study focused on finding efficient methods for disassembling C-lignin and G/S lignin in Euphorbiaceae seed coats, with the extraction by dilute HCl in dioxane being established as the optimized process. The isolated lignin samples were characterized by NMR spectroscopic analyses to mainly consist of benzodioxane units. The disassembled C-lignin samples showed high selectivity in producing catechylpropanol products through Pd/C-catalyzed hydrogenolysis, outperforming feedstocks containing both C and G/S lignins in terms of catalytic activity and selectivity.
