Stepwise benzylic oxygenation via uranyl-photocatalysis

Deqing Hu et al.

Summary: Stepwise oxygenation at the benzylic position of aromatic molecules was achieved under ambient conditions via uranyl photocatalysis, producing carboxylic acids, ketones, and alcohols. The tunability of catalytic activity in uranyl photocatalysis, adjusted by solvents and additives, ensured the accuracy of the stepwise oxygenation. Hydrogen atom transfer between the benzylic position and the uranyl catalyst facilitated oxygenation, as confirmed by kinetic studies.

Boosting activity of molecular oxygen by pyridinium-based photocatalysts for metal-free alcohol oxidation

Shuai Ma et al.

Summary: By utilizing pyridinium derivatives as mediators, a photocatalytic system has been developed for the oxidation of alcohols under mild conditions using air as the oxidant. This system simplifies the catalytic process into a single molecular catalyst without the need for noble metals or co-catalysts. The system shows high efficiency for both aromatic and aliphatic alcohols, making it an ideal platform for green and economical organic syntheses.
