Climate alters the migration phenology of coastal marine species

Joseph A. Langan et al.

Summary: Global oceans have shown significant shifts in the phenology of life-cycle events, particularly in the migration of marine fish and invertebrates sensitive to climate change. A study spanning 7 decades in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, revealed climate's influence on marine species migrations in the northwest Atlantic, with changes in residence periods, timing of coastal zone ingress and egress, and temperature gradients affecting spatial distributions during coastal residency. These findings suggest species are adapting to track their thermal niche amid a changing climate, emphasizing the importance of understanding climate responses across species for managing marine ecosystems and fisheries effectively.

Metabolic and nutritional condition of juvenile tiger sharks exposed to regional differences in coastal urbanization

Bianca de Sousa Rangel et al.

Summary: This study compared metabolic hormones and plasma fatty acids in juvenile female tiger sharks sampled in two areas of the subtropical north Atlantic with different levels of coastal urbanization. The results showed higher corticosteroid levels in sharks sampled in the more urbanized area, but no differences in thyroid hormone concentrations. Additionally, sharks from the more urbanized area had higher percentages of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, while those from the less urbanized area had higher percentages of bacterial markers.
