A new vector-based global river network dataset accounting for variable drainage density

Peirong Lin et al.

Summary: The study introduces a new global hydrography dataset that estimates the spatial variability of river network drainage density worldwide. By utilizing a machine learning approach and incorporating global climatic, topographic, hydrologic, and geologic conditions, high-quality global hydrography data is obtained to support water resources management and enable global modeling of river system processes.

Biogeochemistry of Mediterranean Wetlands: A Review about the Effects of Water-Level Fluctuations on Phosphorus Cycling and Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Inmaculada de Vicente

Summary: Mediterranean wetlands are expected to experience amplified water level fluctuations due to global climate change, which will impact phosphorus dynamics and greenhouse gas emissions. While desiccation may increase CO2 emissions and inundation decrease cumulative CO2 emissions and N2O emissions while increasing CH4 emissions, there is still a lack of knowledge on the net effect of water level fluctuations on greenhouse gas emissions. Further research is needed to assess the role of these ecosystems as a source of greenhouse gases and as a feedback mechanism for global warming.

Using satellite data to identify the methane emission controls of South Sudan's wetlands

Sudhanshu Pandey et al.

Summary: TROPOMI satellite instrument provides high-resolution observations of methane emissions worldwide, revealing unexpectedly large methane enhancements over South Sudan. By using these observations, researchers estimated methane emissions from South Sudan wetlands to be significantly higher than previous model estimates, possibly due to underestimation of inundation extent in the models. The study also found a seasonal mismatch in emissions, with the lowest emissions occurring during the highest precipitation and lowest temperature season, suggesting a stronger temperature control on wetland emissions than previously assumed.
