Extreme climate increased crop nitrogen surplus in the United States

Jien Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that under extreme climate conditions, there was a 51% increase in corn N surplus associated with extremely high temperatures and a 47% increase with extremely low precipitation. Extreme high precipitation was associated with a moderate N surplus increase of 20%, while extremely low temperatures were related to a 14% decrease in N surplus. The Midwest and the Northern Great Plains in the U.S. were identified as N surplus hotspots under extreme climate conditions.

Considerations when using nutrient inventories to prioritize water quality improvement efforts across the US

Robert D. Sabo et al.

Summary: Ongoing water quality degradation linked to nitrogen and phosphorus pollution causes economic damage and reduces the recreational value of surface water while also harming fisheries. Progress in reducing nitrogen and phosphorus pollution in surface water has been slow over the past two decades, requiring efficient use of limited resources and prioritization of watersheds for restoration. A small portion of the landscape in the United States, less than 25% of subbasin area, contains 50% of anthropogenic and agricultural nitrogen and phosphorus surplus, highlighting areas where nutrients are being managed inefficiently.
