Effect of aperture ratio on the cyclic shear behaviour of aggregate-geogrid interfaces

J. Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that there are four possible cyclic shear behaviours for two reinforced interfaces, including shear hardening, cyclic cumulative softening, direct softening, and wave softening. With increasing displacement amplitude, both interfaces showed a transition from shear hardening to shear softening, and overall shear contraction trend was observed in the CDS tests for both interfaces. The stiffness of the interfaces was significantly influenced by displacement amplitude and the ratio of AS/D-50. Compared to MDS tests, the maximum dilation increased in the PCDS tests, particularly at rounded aggregate-geogrid interfaces.

Dynamic shear behaviors of textured geomembrane/nonwoven geotextile interface under cyclic loading

Ji-Yun Chang et al.

Summary: Research on the dynamic shear strength of the GMB/GTX interface was conducted through displacement-controlled cyclic direct shear tests, revealing that the shear strength is influenced by both normal stress and displacement amplitude, while the damping ratio is only affected by displacement amplitude.

Performance of a 33m high geogrid reinforced soil embankment without concrete panel

Mincai Jia et al.

Summary: This study monitored a 33-m-high single-tiered wrapped-facing geogrid reinforced soil embankment in China during construction and for two years afterwards. The results showed an increase in geogrid tensile strains during construction, higher predicted reinforcement loads compared to measured values, linear growth and fast stabilization of vertical earth pressures, horizontal displacement increasing with height, and settlement mainly occurring in the lower and middle portions of the embankment.

Monotonic, cyclic and post-cyclic shearing behavior of sand-EPS geofoam interface

T. H. Basti et al.

Summary: In this study, laboratory tests were conducted to evaluate the monotonic, cyclic, and post-cyclic behavior of the sand-EPS geofoam interface, and the results showed that the number of cycles, sand relative density, EPS geofoam density, and applied normal stress influence the response of the sand-EPS geofoam interface. Increasing the number of cycles, sand relative density, EPS geofoam density, and applied normal stress lead to an increase in the equivalent or secant stiffness of the interface while the damping ratio decreases. Additionally, the mobilized shear stresses generally increase with an increase in EPS density and normal stress.

Particle shape effects on the cyclic shear behaviour of the soil-geogrid interface

Fei-yu Liu et al.

Summary: The study shows that the particle regularity has a strong impact on the interface shear strength and deformation, with the vertical displacement ratio increasing with regularity. The interface stiffness increases with the cycle number for lower particle regularities but decreases for higher regularities. Additionally, the damping ratio trends opposite to shear stiffness with increasing cycle number.

Coupling effects of particle shape and cyclic shear history on shear properties of coarse-grained soil-geogrid interface

Mengjie Ying et al.

Summary: Accurate measurement of particle shapes is essential for studying the cyclic shear behavior of a soil-geogrid interface. The study showed that the interface underwent cyclic shear hardening within a certain relative density range, with hysteresis loop area and cyclic peak shear strength increasing with shear displacement amplitude and decreasing with particle regularity. Additionally, the friction angle decreased linearly with increasing particle regularity in both monotonic and post cyclic direct shear tests.

Experimental investigation on the stress-dilatancy response of aggregate-geogrid interface using parameterized shapes

Jun Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of particle shape on the interface interaction between soil particle and geogrid in reinforced soil structures. Direct shear tests demonstrated that different particle shapes alter the geosynthetic-soil interface shear response under varying normal stresses and geogrid apertures. The results showed that increasing overall regularity led to a decrease in interface shear strength and friction angle.
