Seismicity clusters in Central Chile: investigating the role of repeating earthquakes and swarms in a subduction region

Carla Valenzuela-Malebran et al.

Summary: This study provides a detailed analysis of seismic activity in two persistent clusters in Central Chile, revealing different characteristics with some clusters showing swarm-like seismic activity and others dominated by thrust earthquakes. These seismic activities are likely triggered by local features of the subducting plate.

What's down there? The structures, materials and environment of deep-seated slow slip and tremor

Whitney M. Behr et al.

Summary: This article reviews the constraints on SST deformation processes, including geophysical observations and geological observations. Research shows that the SST source region is an environment rich in fluids and high fluid pressure. In regions of mixed lithology and near-lithostatic fluid pressures, a combination of frictional-viscous shear may scale with the tremor component of SST.

Interplay of seismic and a-seismic deformation during the 2020 sequence of Atacama, Chile

E. Klein et al.

Summary: An earthquake sequence, including a mainshock of magnitude M-w = 6.9 followed by a M-w = 6.4 aftershock, occurred in the Atacama region of Chile in September 2020. Dynamic inversions show that the two largest earthquakes are located on the subduction interface. High rate GPS data allowed for the determination of instantaneous coseismic displacements and inference of coseismic slip models.

Fluid-rich subducting topography generates anomalous forearc porosity

Christine Chesley et al.

Summary: The study reveals that subducting topography plays a crucial role in the mode of fault slip, influencing the occurrence of large megathrust earthquakes. By using electromagnetic data, the research provides insights into the electrical structure and fluid transport mechanisms associated with subducting seamounts.

Shallow slow earthquakes to decipher future catastrophic earthquakes in the Guerrero seismic gap

R. Plata-Martinez et al.

Summary: New offshore observations in the Guerrero seismic gap discovered shallow slow earthquakes, which suggest that a portion of the plate interface undergoes stable slip. This may explain the long return period of large earthquakes and why have previous large earthquakes not propagated into the gap.
