Rupture Process of the 2020 Caribbean Earthquake Along the Oriente Transform Fault, Involving Supershear Rupture and Geometric Complexity of Fault

Tira Tadapansawut et al.

Summary: A large strike-slip earthquake occurred in the Caribbean Sea on January 28, 2020. The earthquake rupture along the Oriente transform fault encountered a bend in the fault system, triggering multiple rupture episodes and a complex rupture evolution. Our analysis revealed complexity of both fault geometry and rupture process that were previously unknown in oceanic transform fault earthquakes.

Fault Interactions Enhance High-Frequency Earthquake Radiation

Shanna X. Chu et al.

Summary: The study found that fault complexity is correlated with high-frequency earthquake radiation, with misaligned faults showing a stronger correlation. This suggests that fault-fault interactions within networks of misaligned faults may play a role in producing high-frequency seismic radiation.

AutoCoulomb: An Automated Configurable Program to Calculate Coulomb Stress Changes on Receiver Faults with Any Orientation and its Application to the 2020 Mw 7.8 Simeonof Island, Alaska, Earthquake

Jianjun Wang et al.

Summary: Coulomb stress changes on receiver fault planes can be calculated using various programs, with some discrepancies in results. A new program called AutoCoulomb provides a more convenient way to batch-process Coulomb stress changes on different fault planes. Results show that Coulomb stress changes on 2D OOPs generated by AutoCoulomb program consistently outweigh those done by the Coulomb 3.4 program.

Consecutive ruptures on a complex conjugate fault system during the 2018 Gulf of Alaska earthquake

Shinji Yamashita et al.

Summary: The study developed a flexible finite-fault inversion method for complex multiple-fault earthquakes, which clarifies the evolution processes of rupture including variations of fault geometry through analyzing teleseismic P waveforms. Applied to the 2018 Gulf of Alaska earthquake, the method successfully revealed that the earthquake ruptured a conjugate system of N-S and E-W faults, showing irregular rupture behavior.
