Influence of Kappa Distributions on the Whistler Mode Instability

Danny Summers et al.

Summary: This study finds that the influence of kappa distributions on the whistler mode instability is complex, as the instability depends on several system parameters as well as the value of kappa.

Evidence of Subproton-Scale Magnetic Holes in the Venusian Magnetosheath

Katherine A. Goodrich et al.

Summary: Depressions in magnetic field strength, known as magnetic holes, are commonly observed in space plasmas. For the first time, evidence of subproton-scale magnetic holes has been reported in the Venusian magnetosheath.

Magnetic Holes in the Solar Wind and Magnetosheath Near Mercury

T. Karlsson et al.

Summary: In this study, a comprehensive statistical analysis of magnetic holes near Mercury in the solar wind using MESSENGER orbital data was conducted. The study investigated various properties of magnetic holes, such as scale size, depth, and magnetic field rotation, and found that the distributions were similar for different types of magnetic holes. The study also discussed the log-normal distribution of solar wind magnetic hole scale sizes and concluded that the background magnetic field strength of the solar wind surrounding the magnetic holes was lower than average, consistent with the observation of magnetic holes in high-beta regions. Additionally, the study provided the first comprehensive statistics of isolated magnetic holes in a planetary magnetosheath, suggesting that these magnetosheath magnetic holes likely have a solar wind origin.

Statistical Properties of Small-scale Linear Magnetic Holes in the Martian Magnetosheath

Mingyu Wu et al.

Summary: The study indicates that small-scale linear magnetic hole (LMH) events are common in the Martian magnetosheath, with an occurrence rate of approximately 1.5 events per hour, the duration mainly less than 0.4 seconds, and the magnetic field strength in these holes can significantly decrease compared to the ambient plasma.
