Observational Evidence of Magnetic Reconnection in the Terrestrial Foreshock Region

K. Jiang et al.

Summary: Magnetic reconnection is proposed as one possible mechanism for electron heating/acceleration in the foreshock region, and two such events are observed in the dawnside and duskside ion foreshock region by the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission. Observations show super-Alfvenic electron outflow, demagnetization of electrons and ions, and significant electron temperature enhancement in sub-ion-scale current sheets.

Electron-only Reconnection in an Ion-scale Current Sheet at the Magnetopause

S. Y. Huang et al.

Summary: Observations suggest the presence of electron-only magnetic reconnection without ion coupling in a current sheet, challenging the standard model of magnetic reconnection. The inner electron diffusion region observed is much longer than predicted by theory, indicating a need for further understanding of electron-scale reconnection.

Observations of Secondary Magnetic Reconnection in the Turbulent Reconnection Outflow

M. Zhou et al.

Summary: This study presents the first evidence of secondary reconnections occurring in the turbulent outflow in Earth's magnetotail. Fourteen secondary reconnections were identified, primarily involving electron-only reconnections, dissipating magnetic energy in the outflow region far from the primary X line, lasting for about one and a half hours.

Turbulence in space plasmas: Who needs it?

W. H. Matthaeus

Summary: This paper reviews the impact of turbulence on fluids, magnetohydrodynamic systems, and plasmas, emphasizing the multiscale space-time properties of the turbulence cascade. It discusses the transfer of energy from large scale reservoirs, through the inertial range, to kinetic scales, as well as the application to space and astrophysical plasmas.
