Multidecadal climate oscillations during the past millennium driven by volcanic forcing

Michael E. Mann et al.

Summary: Research suggests that the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation may actually be influenced by competing effects of anthropogenic greenhouse gases and sulfate aerosols, rather than being an internal climate oscillation. By comparing climate model simulations and paleoclimate data, it is concluded that the apparent multidecadal oscillations are likely artifacts of volcanic activity during the preindustrial era, projecting onto the 50- to 70-year frequency band. Thus, there is currently no compelling evidence for internal multidecadal oscillations in the climate system.

Impacts of Atlantic multidecadal variability on the tropical Pacific: a multi-model study

Yohan Ruprich-Robert et al.

Summary: Analyzing sensitivity experiments across multiple models revealed a significant variation in simulating the impact of Atlantic multidecadal variability (AMV) on the tropical Pacific, mainly driven by differences in moist static energy injection. Correcting models for mean precipitation biases reduced inter-model uncertainty, allowing for a more precise quantification of the cooling effect on the equatorial Pacific following AMV warming.

PMIP4 experiments using MIROC-ES2L Earth system model

Rumi Ohgaito et al.

Summary: This study conducted numerical experiments targeting distinctive past time periods using the MIROC-ES2L model, including the Last Glacial Maximum, two interglacial periods, and climate changes over the past millennium. Globally, there was reasonable agreement between model simulations and proxy data archives, but regional discrepancies remained. The model showed some deficiencies in capturing certain past climate change processes.
