An active source seismo-acoustic experiment using tethered balloons to validate instrument concepts and modelling tools for atmospheric seismology

R. F. Garcia et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the effectiveness of using infrasonic sensors and accelerometers mounted on a tethered helium balloon for controlled seismo-acoustic experiments. It validates ground to air coupling theory and numerical modelling tools, while also highlighting the impact of accelerometer location on records and identifying the optimal sensor placement at the bottom of the balloon envelope.

Infrasound From a Buried Chemical Explosion Recorded on a Balloon in the Lower Stratosphere

Daniel C. Bowman et al.

Summary: Infrasound waveforms generated by natural and anthropogenic phenomena contain important clues about the size and nature of the event. Balloon-borne sensors can record faithful representations of the near-source acoustic wave field at unprecedented range, demonstrating implications for monitoring remote regions of the earth for explosions and volcanic eruptions. Balloon-based infrasound seismology also shows promise for Venus.

The 2010 Haiti earthquake revisited: An acoustic intensity map from remote atmospheric infrasound observations

Shahar Shani-Kadmiel et al.

Summary: In this study, infrasound signals detected at distant ground-based stations are used to generate a map of acoustic intensity, which can be used to estimate shaking intensity globally. The potential use of infrasound-based ShakeMaps alongside conventional methods for earthquake disaster mitigation is highlighted as a valuable tool.

1001 Rocket Launches for Space Missions and Their Infrasonic Signature

Christoph Pilger et al.

Summary: Infrasound array processing is used to monitor atmospheric explosions for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty. Rocket launches, as well-defined ground-truth events, have increased globally in the past decade, providing strong infrasonic signatures. Analysis of 1001 rocket launches between 2009 and mid-2020 has allowed for estimation of global detectability of such events and derivation of an amplitude-energy relation.

The First Detection of an Earthquake From a Balloon Using Its Acoustic Signature

Quentin Brissaud et al.

Summary: By detecting an earthquake for the first time from a balloon-borne microbarometer, this study demonstrates that seismic activity can be detected from a high-altitude platform on Earth. It also shows that Rayleigh wave-induced infrasound can be used to constrain subsurface velocities, laying the groundwork for the detection and characterization of such signals on Venus.

A Bird's-Eye View on Ambient Infrasonic soundscapes

Olivier F. C. den Ouden et al.

Summary: A method for reconstructing microbarom soundscapes in absolute values is introduced, which shows a good agreement with 85% of measurements in the microbarom band of 0.1-0.3 Hz. The reconstructed soundscapes are essential for understanding the ambient infrasonic noise field, natural hazard monitoring, and verification of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty. Insights in the ambient noise field improve monitoring and verification efforts.

Yield estimation of the 2020 Beirut explosion using open access waveform and remote sensing data

Christoph Pilger et al.

Summary: The study utilized various techniques to analyze publicly available data to investigate the massive explosion in Beirut, Lebanon, on August 4, 2020. By combining data from seismological, hydroacoustic, infrasonic, and radar remote sensing sources, the researchers were able to characterize the explosion's source and estimate its explosive yield, which ranged from 0.13 to 2 kilotons of TNT. The approach presented in the study, based on open accessible global station networks and satellite missions, has high scientific and social relevance and can be applied to other explosion events.

Assessing Raspberry Shake and Boom Sensors for Recording African Elephant Acoustic Vocalizations

Oliver D. Lamb et al.

Summary: The study assessed the performance of the Raspberry Shake and Boom (RS&B) sensor package for monitoring African elephants, showing varied success in detecting different signals of interest. The acoustic microphone recorded low-frequency harmonic vocalizations well but struggled with higher frequency harmonics, while the geophone had mixed results in recording seismic waves from vocalizations but better success with higher harmonics. The RS&B unit currently shows limited potential as a monitoring tool for African elephants, with proposed future directions to improve sensitivity.
